Above-ground pool (wood, inflatable, steel, self-supporting, rigid, tubular), kit pool (with modular panels) or in- ground pool (liner pool, shotcrete pool, poured concrete, etc.)… These different types of pools represent amenities that many homeowners like to have in their garden. And for good reason, there is no better way to spend the summer than having friends and family over for a refreshing swim in the water of your pool!

But did you know that compared to its competitors, building an inground pool has undeniable advantages? Durability of materials, quality of installations, good value for money... Not to mention the cachet that inground pools give to your home and garden!

As you can see, building an inground pool has many advantages. Discover them in our guide later!

Why install an in-ground swimming pool in your garden?

1. A fully-fledged aesthetic

If inground pools are so popular with the French, it is particularly for their many possibilities for customization. Indeed, depending on the characteristics of your land, you can give free rein to your imagination and opt for the shape (round, rectangular, square, free-form pool), the font ( flat-bottomed pool , sloping-bottomed pool) and the size you want.

Liner, concrete, shell… In terms of materials, here again, in-ground pools offer a multitude of possibilities. And you can even go further by building an infinity pool, a waterfall pool, a mirror pool while adding options such as a swimming lane, counter-current swimming, coping stones, etc.

With inground pools, you can give free rein to your mind to create the project and environment that you like on the grounds of your home. However, the price of an inground pool is a factor to take into consideration because it represents a financial investment… Especially if you opt for an inground wooden pool!

However, installing a polyester shell pool offers an interesting alternative in terms of budget, but also quality. Indeed, the latter are made from a gel coat mold that takes all the desired shapes (rectangular, square, round or free-form). The latter can also be tinted in different colors ranging from pure white, azure blue to ivory to allow optimal customization .

2. A robust and waterproof swimming pool model

Depending on the type of pool you have chosen to install in your garden, you will not have the same quality of coating. As a reminder, the latter corresponds to the material that covers the inside of a pool and therefore ensures its finish.

This choice has an impact on the aesthetics of your swimming pool, on its robustness but also its watertightness:

  • Mosaic (or tiling): in addition to ensuring a solid and waterproof coating for many years , mosaic pools offer a wide range of patterns and colors. A style in its own right that will dress up your outdoor space!
  • The liner : this is a flexible PVC tarpaulin that is stretched along the walls of a pool. The advantage of this waterproof tarpaulin lies in its resistant, anti-UV and anti-slip character. Due to its price, its properties and its ease of installation, this type of coating is the most used by pool owners. However, the latter must be changed every 10 years!
  • The polyester shell : molded in the factory and installed in 4 days on your land, this pool covering is just as robust as traditional pools. If your polyester pool is maintained regularly, you will not encounter any problems for the next 20 years. Be careful though, this type of solution is sensitive to excessive ground movements.

Inground pool, price and maintenance: the disadvantages of an inground pool

Of course, the cost of an inground pool is higher than other pool models (above-ground wooden pool, semi-buried pool). But this is explained by its quality, its customization possibilities and the need to call on a professional to study the ground, the constraints of your land, and for the installation of it (earthworks, installation of the structure, etc.).

Finally, to keep your pool healthy for as long as possible, you will need to carry out careful and regular maintenance of the structure. During the swimming season, check the water quality at least twice a week and clean the surface, bottom and walls of your pool using a pool robot and treatment products. Once the summer season is over, you must winterize your pool and maintain the various equipment (heat pump, filter, skimmers, robot, etc.).

Works, taxes… How to declare your in-ground swimming pool?

Have you decided to install a pool in your garden? Please note that you will first need to declare your in-ground pool to your local town hall and the tax authorities.

If your swimming pool is between 10m2 and 100m2 , a prior declaration of works is required. This document, to be provided to the town hall of your municipality, authorizes the administration to verify that your swimming pool project complies with the town planning regulations in force.

Once the file is in the hands of the town hall, expect between 1 and 2 months before getting a response. If it is positive, you will have 2 years to start building your pool .

Will your swimming pool be larger than 100m2 ? In this case, you will need to apply for a building permit from your town hall.

In addition to the administrative procedures relating to construction, it is also important to declare your new swimming pool to the tax authorities. And the reason for this is simple: by installing a pool in your garden, you considerably increase the rental value of your property. However, this rental value constitutes the basis for calculating the housing tax and the property tax on your home. And the more valuable your property is, the more your taxes are likely to be increased!
